Movie Night

Last night I went to the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz to see a showing of the 90's film "Empire Records." Now this is by no means a classic film you must rush out to see but is instead one of those teenybopper movies with a good soundtrack. Meaning I of course like it a lot!

This showing was sold out as part of the monthly series "Girlie Night," meaning the Drafthouse will show a movie that one would show during a slumber party. These special showings tend to be busy so I made sure we (my GF - who puts this movie in her top 10 list - and I) were there an hour before the show started. This guarantees us a good seat (at the Ritz you enter from the back of the theatre, therefore I like the back aisle seats). We actually tested three different spots and settled on a center aisle near the back of the theatre. It was perfect for an early escape, trip to the bathroom and right in the center of the screen. We ordered our food and all was well.

Right before the movie started one of the managers started asking people to scoot down and came and asked if we would move down one seat because there was a party of three who wanted to sit together and they would put folding chairs at the end of the aisle. I said no. I said that I got here an HOUR early to get the seat I wanted. They didn't say anything and asked the people at the other end of the row to scoot - to which they obliged. I felt mean but REALLY if they all wanted to sit together, then they could have gotten their butts to the theatre an hour early and would be guaranteed the spot they wanted to! The theatre still put two folding chairs next to mine for patrons to sit in - meaning they oversold the show. I pushed those chairs closer together and further away from me so I still had my aisle seat.

Now - your opinion...Does all of this make me sound like an incredible crab or do you feel like I am justified in saying no because I planned ahead??

I think you can say yes or no - they did phrase it as a question, AND they did oversell the show. It sounds like they recognized that, since they didn't make a fuss about it. But I bet it made you feel crappy anyway, which is too bad.

That's the first time I've ever heard of a movie patron being asked to scoot down (by the management). And like Sinda said, you're perfectly within your rights to refuse. I don't think you're unreasonable, I think the theatre is for over selling and taking away your aisle seat.

You did the right thing! They had the nerve even asking you to scoot.

You shouldn't have been asked to move - they should have gotten there early. And, it is so like you to get there early and test different seats!
